Happy Motherin Sunday (pic by Giftpundits.com)

Whether you are one, care for one, or are missing one very much at the moment, Mothering Sunday is a time when all mums are foremost in our thoughts.

Any mum will tell you that just a phone call or a message to say you are thinking of her is more than enough, but if you need inspiration for special treats, look no further than our own fabulous range of regional independent suppliers for great gift ideas.

Blooming Lovely

Let’s begin with the obvious but none the less valid option of flowers. Mothering Sunday takes place on 14 March, just when the most glorious spring flowers are at their beautiful best. Local florists will all create stunning posies, bouquets and arrangements to suit every budgets and with the option of home delivery.  Pollen Floristry (www.pollenfloristry.co.uk ) in Oakham will create a stunning bespoke bouquet or arrangement from £24 but are equally happy to wrap a simple bunch of daffodils for you – it’s the thought that counts.

For something longer lasting or for green fingered garden lovers, try a filled planter or perhaps a pretty shrub from the great range at Gates Garden Centre (gatesgardencentre.co.uk) where  you’ll also find a huge array of cards and giftware.

Wild Fig Fragrance collection by Beefayre
Feelgood Fragrance

Back in 2003, local business woman Wendy Stirling was shocked to find how supposedly ‘natural’ shampoo and other skincare was full of nasty chemicals. Driven by the belief she could offer something better, she created ‘Botanicals’ – her own hair and skincare range. Almost 20 years later the range is as kind to skin as it is to the environment using only carefully selected natural and organic ingredients. The entire range is certified organic by  The Soil Association, 100% vegan, cruelty-free, not tested on animals and palm oil free. The perfect choice for ethically aware mums or those with sensitive skin, Botanicals can be purchased from a nationwide network of salons and spas or at www.botanicals.co.uk

Inspired in a similar way by the plight of our bee populations, Sharon Jervis’s interest and concern for the bees led to the launch of her Market Harborough based business. Beefayre (www.beefayre.com ), is a collection of ethically sourced and produced candles, diffusers, body and bath products. “Our products are all made in England. We don’t ever test on animals and are PETA certified; nor do we use beeswax in our candles. Instead they are made using a blend of natural plant wax from a sustainable source. None of our ingredients are derived directly from animals but in our lip balms and hand creams we use animal friendly ingredients such as beeswax and honey. Our scented candles are made from 100% plant wax with cotton wicks, recycled printed glass holders and no petrochemicals for a long, clean burn. A perennial favourite is the Mummy Bee collection – ideal for mums or mums to be.”

Comfort Food

Foodie mums will appreciate a bespoke hamper from Otter’s Fine Foods where Leo Sugden and his team will put together a collection of savoury or sweet delicious delights from gorgeous cheeses to other deli goodies. We love the Breakfast Box and Prosecco Platter at £20.85 which can be ordered via the website at www.ottersfinefoods.co.uk. It’s the perfect breakfast in bed treat for mum,  consisting of 114g of sliced smoked salmon, six eggs (for scrambling), Atkins & Potts hollandaise sauce, two English muffins and two mini bottles of prosecco. There may be two bottles but dont expect her to share!

What about a truly fine takeaway from Sarpech, Rutland’s popular Indian restaurant?  Their luxurious cuisine is primarily from Punjab and Pakistan and their Tuesday to Sunday takeaway menu is just as varied and tasty as their in-house offering. Order online at www.sarpech.co.uk

Promise A Gift

OK, so we’re not quite ready for picnics and days out just yet but a voucher promise for a day out somewhere lovely will never disappoint. Barnsdale Gardens; Grimsthorpe, Rockingham and Belvoir Castles or Belton and Burghley Houses would all deliver on a fantastic value for money venue when they reopen to the public. You can purchase entry admission vouchers on line at each venue’s website and give mum something really great to look forward to later in the summer.

Capture The Moment

Sticking with the voucher theme, why not book a session with Rutland’s award winning professional family photographer – Sonara Studios (www.sonarastudios.com )?  We’re never going to forget the last 12 months but a beautiful family portrait will also remind you of how much your family – and especially Mum – means to you.

Whatever you decide, we wish you and all mums across the region a peaceful and happy Mothering Sunday.
